Since the beginning of this month, the diverse commercial applications of the world's first batch of intelligent simulated dinosaurs have marked the official entry of Zigong's simulated dinosaur industry into its 3.0 intelligent era.

The seventh plenary session of the 12th Provincial Party Committee proposed a development strategy characterized by "upholding culture as the soul, tourism as the foundation, leveraging science and technology for empowerment, and prioritizing conservation." The upgrading journey of Zigong's synthetic dinosaur industry serves as a vivid embodiment of this philosophy. To date, this industry has captured over 90% of the global market share, establishing itself as a veritable "global leader." Recently, our reporters visited a leading local enterprise to uncover the underlying rationale behind this industrial transformation and upgrading initiative.

The leap from "seeing the dragon" to "creating the dragon": from mechanical motion to intelligent vitality

Guo Qihong, chairman of Zigong Gengu Longteng Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Gengu Longteng"), first learned about dinosaurs during his childhood. In 1982, when he was seven years old, Guo Qihong heard that a "dragon" had been unearthed in Dashanpu, located about ten li along the mountain road from his home; it was not until he turned eighteen that he saw the actual fossils at the Zigong Dinosaur Museum. In 1998, in his twenties, Guo Qihong, by a stroke of luck, entered the field of creating replica dinosaurs and dinosaur lamps.

In 2006, Guo Qihong founded Gengu Longteng, whose initial business focus was primarily on static models and simple dynamic installations, with clients consisting mainly of scenic areas and theme parks. This "static model" persisted for over a decade.

The turning point came after the pandemic. Guo Qihong observed that customers also began to "seek the new": "They proactively asked, 'Is there anything new?' —such as flexible, interactive options—even if they were willing to accept costs 20% to 40% higher than before." These market shifts made him realize that "failure to transform was no longer an option."

On October 16, in the R&D laboratory of Gengu Longteng, the research team was debugging an intelligent simulation of a Triceratops: upon pressing the remote control, the Triceratops could not only walk steadily and tilt its head, but also respond to questions via A-Dialogue, its eyes following the speaker's tone during the exchange. Guo Qihong noted that this "lifelike" effect stemmed from two key technological breakthroughs.

One key advancement is the upgrade of the core power system. The team has abandoned conventional motors in favor of collaborating with robotics manufacturers to customize the internal chassis of the dinosaur model. "Previously, the opening and closing of its mouth exhibited rigid mechanical motions; now, it can open slowly and close rapidly like a real dinosaur, and can even adjust its range of motion based on sound cues—thereby eliminating the awkward 'deformed gait' of four-legged dinosaur models," stated Guo Qihong. He added that the current intelligent simulated dinosaur can now traverse straight lines and perform small jumps.

Timeless Dragon: Four-Legged Intelligent Simulated Dinosaur

A more critical breakthrough was achieved at the software level. Guo Qihong revealed that in June, the team entered into deep collaboration with a robotics manufacturer to explore secondary programming capabilities.

"Previously, the robot's body and the dinosaur skin animations we developed were handled separately; whenever the robot moved to a new location, we had to use a separate remote control to operate its mouth and eyes, which was quite cumbersome." After four months of dedicated effort, they finally achieved "integrated control" through close collaboration with the partner manufacturer.

Gengu Longteng has partnered with UBTech—a leading artificial intelligence enterprise in Zigong—to develop a large-scale intelligent simulation quadrupedal dinosaur.

On September 30, the "Eternal Dragon" four-legged intelligent simulated dinosaur made its global debut. In less than a month, over 20 orders have already been shipped to the factory, with customers from the United States, Peru, and Spain placing orders one after another. Market feedback has exceeded expectations. Guo Qihong revealed that "the most popular models are the Ankylosaurus and the Triceratops; customers particularly appreciate their interactive features, noting that these features can attract more visitors."

Regarding the future of the company, Guo Qihong has a long-term vision. He hopes that in the future, beyond intelligent dinosaurs, the company can also expand into derivative products such as dinosaur-themed animated films and songs. "I want our dinosaurs to be more than just 'models' —they should evolve into a cultural IP," he said.
